I don't know why I feel like compiling some sort of 2006 list, but I do and nobody's forcing you to read it anyway. This year was the longest and most "topsy turvy" one I think I've ever had. Here's a sampling...

Cardinals win the World Series.
This hadn't happened since 1982. I think I remember them losing in 1985, and I definitely remember being upset when they lost in 1987. So I'd been wanting a Cardinals championship for as long as I can remember, more or less. It still hasn't fully sunk in, but even if nothing else of any significance had occurred this year, it would be enough to still qualify as a REALLY good year.

Jack has a seizure.
I'd never had to dial 911 before and I'll be perfectly happy if I never have to do it again. (Side note: it's no fun to hear someone say "Calm down, sir, I can't understand you.") I hate that Amy was out Christmas shopping and had to come home to a living room full of paramedics and our son lying dazed on the couch, but I'm glad that she wasn't home to see what I saw. There's quite a bit from this night that I hope I never have to endure again. Emergency rooms and ambulances, etc.

Job offer from Halliburton.
This was the most life-altering event on the list. A year ago Wyoming would have been pretty close to the bottom of the list of states in which I could see myself living. But we've also adapted to life in the Rockies better than I would have predicted. Location repercussions aside, I don't think I could have gotten a more perfect job offer.

That job was a bad fit from the beginning, and honestly I should have left much sooner. I wasn't sure if this belonged in the good or bad category, but in the end the relief and excitement of not having to work in that office anymore was SLIGHTLY outweighed by the dread and stress of having to find a new job.

Baby #2 coming.
Pretty self-explanatory stuff. We're definitely excited to have another one from scratch, and we should be finding out pretty soon if Jack's gonna have a little brother or sister. Also, this entry was made all the more sweet by the phone call to Drew and Charlotte to give them the news when they basically said "Yep, same here."

The month in Rock Springs.
One of the guys I work with called the place "God's urinal" and it fits it quite nicely. I never want to go back, I never want Amy to have to set foot in that city, I wouldn't wish that fate on anybody.

Death of my grandfather.
This was the first year that I've lost a grandparent. And it sucks. It didn't catch anyone by surprise so that made it easier, and seeing everybody in Tennessee was nice. But I still don't like funerals.

Aggies 12 Longhorns 7.
I feel kinda bad for having two sports items here but really I'm not surprised. Texas had won the last six meetings, and we'd had some pretty pathetic showings during that losing streak, so it was nice to finally turn it around, especially in Austin. But even if that wasn't the case, it still feels good to beat the sips. I just wish we could've played a better second half against Cal and won the Holiday Bowl. I feel better about Fran though and hope next season is more of the same.

Moving.
We've had to move 3 times in the last 15 months. Words can't fully express my hatred for the process. This most recent move to Casper was the worst. I couldn't fit all my stuff into the biggest truck Uhaul offers (26') which meant I had to make an extra trip to get it all. And to make matters worse, the drive back from Casper to Brighton to reload was my crash course introduction to driving in snow and ice and Wyoming winds. When we relocate again I will demand Halliburton pay for professional movers to take care of everything, and I'll kick and scream and threaten to quit in order to get it.

In many ways 2006 was the Year of Jack for us, so I'm picking this moment somewhat at random just to represent all the things he's done to make this year a blast. That sounds hokey but as a dad I think I've earned that, the right to be hokey.
